Volunteer
Giving of your time and skills is an invaluable way to bring joy and hope into the life of a child who’s been neglected or abused.
The JCH Mentorship Programme is based on the model of the well-known Bright Stars Mentorship programme and works by providing adult role models to vulnerable children through a one-on-one relationship.
The JCH Mentorship Programme recruits adult mentors from a wide demographic, trains and screens them for suitability, and then matches each mentor with a specific child at JCH.
Mentors spend one hour a week for a minimum period of one year with the young person to build a relationship, motivate, guide, support and allow the children to dream and grow. The aim of the mentorship is for mentors to compliment the work done at JCH for the children to become responsible citizens and themselves able to give back to their communities. Mentorship takes place in an informal manner with the emphasis on relationship building. Mentors are encouraged to take an interest in their mentees’ schooling, assist with homework and introduce the children to their own network of resources (this includes career guidance and life skills).
Throughout the mentoring year JCH provides mentor support.
All applicants are required to attend a training session to be held in February and July each year. Applications are open for mentors all year round and potential mentors can apply by emailing director@jch.org.za.
Please note: volunteering takes place mainly during working hours. Police clearance may be required, especially for those interacting directly with the children.
