Children's gallery

What a talented bunch of kids we have here at Johannesburg Children's Home! This is just a small selection of many paintings they've created over the past few months, followed by an essay written by young Khanyesa, who went on a school holiday camp recently. Enjoy!

Khanyesa's Diary of the School Adventure Camp

Day One – I woke up at 4 o'clock, had a shower and got dressed. When I got to school, I greeted my friends. Mr Bryant ticked our names off and we got onto the bus. At a quarter to six we left, it took us hours to get to the caves. There was this lady named Angie who told us about the different caves. When that was done we got back into the bus and travelled to the Blyd Canyon.

We took our bags and were sent to our dorms. We were divided into groups and I was in Sakie's group. We played lots of games and then went to have a shower. We had chicken a la king and rice with salad and desert [an ice-cream cone]. After that the girls watched a DVD about honey badgers and the boys went to camp outside in the bush.

Day Two - we went to the Maholoholo Rehabilitation Centre. We saw lots of amazing animals and heard so many sad and touching stories about them. Once that was over we got onto the bus and returned to the Blyd Canyon to eat lunch. We went to the tuck shop and sat on the rocks to eat our sweets.

After an hour or two we called to go to the Reptile Park and saw all the deverstating things that a Puff Adder can do to a humban being. When we returned from the park we went to have a quick swim in the river, then we went to have a shower and got ready for supper. After supper we [the girls] went camping and the boys watched the DVD. When we went to sleep in the bushes, we played a game. We got told that there was a lion but it was Freddy and Michael who were making the lion sound.

Day Three - We went to the cheater park and we walked around the game reserve. When we left the game reserve we went home and had lunch. After, we went River Raft Riding and it was a lot of fun. After RRR we had to make a picture on fabric on how to stop people from poaching animals.

Day Four – We went to play paintball and my teacher shot me in the back twice. After paintball we went to play stacking the crocodiles [we did not stack real crocs] we had to stack the boats. Then we played water polo. That was fun. Then we went to the obstacle course. After that we had lunch and went to the tuck shop. After that we went on the nature walk with Freddy.

We went to have a shower and then to eat supper. We braaied marsh mellows. Then we chatted for a little while before we went to bed.

Day Five - We woke up at 6.30am, got dressed and cleaned our rooms. Then we went for breakfast and at about 7.30am we left. On our way back we stopped at Wimpy to eat lunch. Then we got back at school at about 2.45pm. Mom Lerato came to pick me up.
